Planning your journey to North Cyprus is simple and stress-free when you know the core travel regulations in advance. Here is everything you need to know about passports, visas, and entry requirements.
Flying to Ercan Airport (ECN)
Ercan Airport (ECN) is the primary aviation gateway to North Cyprus. It provides the most direct access for visitors staying in Lefkoşa, Kyrenia, Famagusta, Iskele, and beyond.
- Connecting via Turkey: Most international travellers reach Ercan via a connecting flight through Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya, or Izmir.
- Transit Rules: If you remain within the transit area at a Turkish airport, standard transit rules apply. If you exit the airport during your layover, Turkish visa regulations will apply to your passport nationality — check in advance.
Tourist Visa & Passport Entry Rules
- Visa-Free Entry: Most nationalities can enter North Cyprus without applying for a visa in advance. The standard tourist stay allowed is up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
- Turkish Citizens: No passport required — a valid national ID card is sufficient.
- Passport Validity: Always travel with a passport that remains valid for several months beyond your intended departure date.
Arriving via South Cyprus
Some travellers choose to fly into Larnaca or Paphos airports (Republic of Cyprus) and subsequently cross into North Cyprus via land border checkpoints. If you select this route, you must check:
- Entry visa rules for the Republic of Cyprus
- Current regulations for crossing at the border checkpoints
See our detailed Border Crossings Guide for all 9 open crossing points and their hours.
⚠️ Important: Final entry permission is always subject to the approval of immigration officers at passport control. Keep your valid travel documents readily available upon arrival.
